If you are someone working in the food industry, chances are that you would probably be using your freezer a lot! Here are some tips to help you maintain the freezer and the food and to store it properly, just like a professional would.
You should inspect your freezer at least one time every week. Check it to see that the food is in date and also that it is all properly wrapped. Also ensure that all labels are visibly in place. You should also check for any freezer burns on the foodstuff, usually a dry patch that is left as moisture quickly evaporates from the food when it is not properly sealed. Discard any foodstuff that is not fit to use.Use freezer bags or cling film if need be to re-wrap any foodstuff. Just a single layer of cling film is never enough. Make sure you have wrapped it at least three times over. When your freezer is well filled, it works more efficiently. The temperature remains constant easily when it is reasonably full. You should also check to ensure the ideal temperature in the freezer is maintained, daily. For domestic use this is -18 degrees Celsius.Think about what you are going to need from the freezer before you open the door. It will not only reduce the amount of cold air escaping from the fridge, but also save you money on your electricity bill.Don't put any Hot or Warm foods directly in the freezer. Cool them off to room temperature before you place them in the freezer as it could have an effect of warming up the already stored food and could easily lead to the growth of food poisoning bacteria in those foods. If you want to freeze-cool some foods you have cooked, you should cool them to around 10 degrees Celsius or less within 90 minutes, wrap them properly and then store. There are many bad kitchen habits which could result in ill health. If you want to learn more about food safety, you should enrol in a one-day training in food safety which gives a certificate in basic food safety and hygiene and is nationally recognised.
